The Honor Guard was formed due to the need of a proper military service group to perform the final honors to the deceased veterans in a manner fitting the sacrifice fir the United States of America.
The Honor Guard is a blending of two veteran’s service groups, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6664 of Library PA and the American Legion Post 760 of Behtel Park PA.
The South Hills Honor Guard initiating action was a meeting between Calvin Marquis of the VFW Post 6664 and Ted Pace of the American Legion Post 760.
A plan was formed to provide training by active military from the 99th RSC CASOPS. Each trainee was awarded a special medal to wear upon completion.
A State Grant was obtained thru Rep. Ralph Kaiser to purchase uniforms
Special arrangements were made with the government to provide the M1 Rifles for the ceremonies, also to provide the blank ammunition for these rifles.
Each member’s uniform costs approximately $800.00 and with over 20 members, presents a minimum total of $16,000, not counting the replacement and maintenance, cleaning and alteration costs.
Since we are a volunteer group there is no charge for our funeral service. We do accept donations if offered.
The first funeral we performed was on June 30th 2000 for Norman Kappler, past 36th District Commander of the American Legion and Past Commander of the American Legion Post 760 Bethel Park PA.
From that time we have officiated over 3,000 veteran burials among which are
Deceased Members of our Honor Guard:
Tony Bellini Gene Frediani Larry Swift Bob Knorr Tom Brandis
Tony Balisteri Tom Cambell Jim McKee Jerry Jones James Manion
Nick DeFalle Calvin Cornell Calvin Marquis Tom Tully
We of the South Hills Honor Guard are proud to provide this last service
for our comrades in arms,
an Honor the Veteran so rightly earned and so richly deserves.
